Depending on type the load cells measure tension and compression, tension only or compression only. Capacity ranges for the load cells vary significantly from 5 lbs to 300,000 lbs.

Futek Advanced Sensor Technology Inc. manufactures 13 types of load cells including: automotive, bending beam, canister, rod end, pancake, in line, load button, force washer, medical, low profile, S beam, side mounted, and thru hole/donut. Carolina Scales distributes load cells manufactured by Rice Lake Weighing Systems and Cardinal. Rice Lake's load cells are available with capacities up to 100,000 lbs, and are used for tank and hopper weighing, mechanical scale conversions, and bulk material management. Cardinal's line of load cell assemblies include self-checking load cell mounts and tensions assemblies. The load cells feature capacities from 110 lbs to 20,000 lbs, and read by/resolution of 0.05 lbs to 20 lbs.

Flintec manufactures single-point, planar beam, beam-type, tension, compression, and custom-designed load cells. Artech Industries Inc. manufactures six types of load cells including: S beam, single-ended, double-ended, tension and compression canister, single point beam, and pancake.
