Trans-Tek offers both AC and DC linear variable differential transformers (LVDT) to measure linear position accurately. The AC Series include the 210-220 Long Stroke LVDT that measures strokes from 0.5" to 60", the 230 Miniature that measures from 0.01" to 2", in addition to the Series 280 Low Cost and 290 General Purpose. There are two DC Series, including the 200 (0.1" to 0.2" strokes) and 240 (0.1" to 6" strokes). Also available are the angular displacement transducers, which offer position sensing to 160 degrees (Series 600), 300 degrees (Series 605), or 360 degrees (Model 607).

Bourns offers both rotary position sensors, as well as slide potentiometers.  The Series TC88 rotary position sensor has a rotation life of 100,000 cycles and resistance range of 10K ohms; the Series 3382 has a rotation life of 1,000,000 cycles and resistance range of 2.5K to 100K ohms. Both have a power rating of 0.05 watts and tolerances +/-30%, and are RoHS compliant. The company also produces 11 series of slide potentiometers, from the 10-30 mm PDV to the 45-100 mm PTB.

Celesco produces a variety of linear and rotary position sensing devices, including cable extension position transducers, linear potentiometers, rotation position transducers, and incline position transducers. The cable extension position transducers are designed for tight spaces with high-cycle applications, with measurement range options of 0-4.75", 0-12.5", and 0-50". There are three series of linear potentiometers, including the MLP (0.5- to 6-inch full stroke range, 0.5% linearity), CLP (1- to 11.5-inch full stroke range, 0.1-0.2% linearity), and CLWG (3- to 30-inch full stroke range, 0.04%-0.1% linearity). There are also four rotary sensor products, all of which are IP67 or IP68 rated, including the IT9000 Series, which measures large angles of inclinaton from 45- to 270-degrees.

Melexis produces several Hall Effect devices useful for both movement and position sensing. The MLX90316 Rotary Position Sensor IC offers 12-bit angular resolution and 10-bit angular accuracy, and can be used for controlling headlamp position, side mirror position, and other similar applications. The MLX90324 Under-the-Hood Rotary Position Sensor provides 12-bit resolution on 360 degrees of rotation, and the ability to report current angle values in analog, digital pulse width modulation, or digital single edge nibble transmission. Finally, the MLX90333 Triaxis 3D-Joystick Position Sensor is able to sense any magnet moving in its surroundings, and is sensitive to the flux density applied both orthogonally and parallel to the IC surface.

MTS manufactures a variety of Temposonic linear position sensors. The R-Series offers both hydraulic, profile, and flexible housing styles, and resolution as low as 0.001 mm. The G-Series includes products with either analog or digital pulse outputs, and hydraulic or profile housing styles; stroke ranges vary between 50-1525 mm, 50-2540 mm, 50-5080 mm, and 50-7620 mm, and resolution is either infinite or controller dependent. Several other product series and housing styles are also available, from the embeddable IP40 and IP67 in the C-Series, to the rod and cylinder in the E-Series.

Penny and Giles produces a wide range of linear position sensors, linear displacement transducers, and linear potentiometers that offer stroke length measurements from 0.2" to 196", using potentiometric, inductive, eddy current, and Hall Effect technology. They also offer rotary position sensors to provide angle measurements from 10 to 360 degrees, with environmental protection to IP68 and IP69K.

Spectra Symbols manufactures customer linear potentiometers that are specially designed for use in medical, automative, and electronic products. The company's linear position sensors are 0.5 mm thick, and each line is offered in both rectilinear and rotary designs. The SoftPot membrane potentiometer comes in various sizes, and has a life cycle >1 million, standard resistance of 10k ohms, and resistance tolerance +/-20%. The HotPot is designed to handle extreme temperature fluctuation and provides a life cycle >10 million, while the Thinpot potentiometer is currently used in many medical devices. Both the HotPot and Thinpot have a linearity of +/-1% or +/-3% for their linear designs, and +/-3% or +/-5% for rotary.

State Electronics builds rotary, linear, and multi-turn potentiometers and encoders. The custom selection starts with the 0.5-inch square, plastic and cermet modular Series 388 and 389; the 0.675-inch square, metal shaft and bushing Series 70; and the 0.675-inch plastic shaft and bushing Series 72. In addition, the company offers millions of combinations of modular and motorized potentiometers, with single, dual, triple, and quad modules, as well as customized switches, shafts, and terminals. They also offer precision potentiometers for heavy equipment and robotics and multi-turn potentiometers for accurate and stable control input, in addition to Milspec, linear motion, and Hall Effect devices.

Transducers Direct features five types of linear position transducers. The TD390 has a 6" to 56" stroke, and is typically used for injection molding machinery; it also comes in a 1" to 6" model (TD390S) that provides 0.3% linearity and IP65 shaft seal. The low cost options are the TD590 (50 mm to 1,000 mm stroke) and TD580M (100 mm to 1,000 mm stroke). The compact model is the TD592; it has a 10 mm to 50 mm stroke, spring return, and independent linearity up to +/-0.1%.

UniMeasure manufactures both linear position and rotary position transducers. First, the Standard Series consists of cable extension linear position and linear velocity transducers in a NEMA 1 (IP40) housing. The ZX-PA Series analog position transducer has dimensions of 0.73" x 0.73" x 0.375" with a total measurement range of 1.5". Next, the LX Series is the company's compact linear position transducer, and comes in 11 different measurement ranges. The JX Series is environmentally sealed, and comes in 13 measurement ranges. The last three series are the HX, which is designed for hostile environments; the HXLR, designed to convert linear motion to a digital output from industrial rotary encoders, whether incremental or absolute; and the RTX rotary position transducer with analog output.

FISO develops and manufactures fiber optic displacement and positioning sensors designed for monitoring electrically energized components in high-power transformers, structural monitoring, and actuators. The technology is immune to EMI and RFI, and provides full functionality in temperatures above 100 degrees Celsius. The FOD linear position and displacement sensor is housed in aluminum or composite material, and offers a resolution up to 0.002 mm, 20 mm linear stroke, and accuracy +/-0.02 mm.

Honeywell offers linear position sensors, angular position sensors, and other sensing solutions that are capable of measuring the angle direction of a magnetic field from a magnet with <0.07 degree resolution. These sensors can be operated below 3 V, with a bandwidth response of 0-5 MHz. The HMC1501 is a single bridge sensor that comes in an 8-pin SOIC package with an angular range of +/-45 degrees; the HMC1512 is a two bridge sensor that comes in an 8-pin SOIC package with an angular range of +/-90 degrees.

Optek offers many choices for Hall Effect sensing technology, including bi-polar, ratiometric, and uni-polar options. Most of their products come with a minimum voltage of 4.5 and a maximum of 24. Operating points and release points are highly variable depending on the part number.

TR Electronic manufactures cylinder and non-cylinder mount absolute linear position sensors, as well as industrial and laser distance sensors. Its cylinder mount linear sensors generally provide a stroke length up to 3 meters, but can accomodate other lengths by request. The company also offers six non-cylinder mount options, a variety of IP67, high-pressure and high-temperature-resistant proximity sensors, and laser sensors that can record distances up to 240 meters and uneven surfaces.

Variohm EuroSensor supplies a wide range of position sensors. The Variohm Hall Effect Rotary Sensor can withstand temperatures up to 125 degrees Celsius, and is sealed to IP65 with an option to IP67; angles are also programmable up to 360 degrees. Other non-contacting rotary position sensors are available with different programmable angles and outputs. The company also offers an array of linear position sensors and transducers with stroke lengths as short as 10 mm and as long as 50 meters, as well as non-contacting linear position sensors in various housing options, sealed to IP68, with a 4,500 mm stroke length maximum.

Customer Sensors & Technologies supplies a variety of linear variable differential transformer (LVDT) and rotary variable differential transformer (RVDT) position sensors by Kavlico. Both its single- and multi-channel LVDTs can operate in pressures in excess of 10,000 psi, with an accuracy of +/-0.5% and a linearity of +/-0.25%. The RVDTs are capable of a +/-80 degree angular range in single- and multi-channel designs, with an accuracy of +/-0.25%.

Royal Hydraulics offers hydraulic and pneumatic design and manufacturing for positioning technology, which can then be used in a broad range of applications, including production processes, as well as performance and reliability testing. The company's in-house engineering department both designs and/or manufactures both custom and standard units for use in applications such as presses and motor drives.
